1. sense 1 — To wail or lament with voiced grief. First Samuel 7:2 records a turning point: 'all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD'—audible longing during the ark's absence. Ezekiel 32:18 commands the prophet: 'wail for the multitude of Egypt and send them down'—prophetic mourning as enacted judgment. Micah 2:4 predicts: 'In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you and wail with bitter lamentation'—enemies mocking with mournful chants. The Aramaic cognate and onomatopoetic quality suggest this is the sound of crying out in grief. 3×
