Turban, priestly headdress — the linen turban wrapped around the high priest's head as part of the sacred vestments
The מִצְנֶפֶת (mitsnephet) is the distinctive linen turban worn exclusively by the high priest, forming part of his sacred vestments described in Exodus and Leviticus. It is wound around the head, and upon it the golden plate engraved 'Holy to the LORD' is fastened with a blue cord (Exod 28:4, 37, 39; 29:6). Moses places it on Aaron's head at the consecration ceremony (Lev 8:9; 16:4). Ezekiel's visionary temple code prescribes a turban for the prince or priest (Ezek 21:31). The related form צָנִיף applies more broadly to any turban or headdress (Job 29:14; Isa 62:3). Spanish 'mitra/turbante' and French 'turban/tiare' reflect both the priestly and the more general headwear senses.

Senses
1. turban, priestly headdress The official linen turban of the Israelite high priest, wound around the head and bearing the golden plate inscribed 'Holy to the LORD' (Exod 28:4, 36-37, 39; 29:6; 39:28, 31). Placed on Aaron's head at his consecration by Moses (Lev 8:9) and worn on the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:4). Ezekiel uses the term in prophetic oracle, declaring 'remove the turban, take off the crown' as a symbol of the reversal of authority (Ezek 21:31). Zechariah 3:5 describes a clean turban placed on Joshua the high priest's head as a sign of restored priestly purity. Spanish 'mitra/turbante' and English 'turban/mitre' both render the term. 12×
