To slip, slide, totter; causatively, to make shake or stumble — of feet losing stability or divine judgment causing trembling
A verb depicting the loss of sure footing, whether literal or figurative. In psalms of trust the faithful declare their feet do not slip because God broadens their path (2 Sam 22:37; Ps 18:36; 26:1), while Job observes that the stumbling are despised by those at ease (Job 12:5). The Hiphil causative appears in imprecatory prayer, asking God to make enemies' loins shake continually (Ps 69:23). Spanish 'resbalar' and French 'glisser' both capture the sliding motion, while German renderings lean toward 'slip' — together confirming the core image of ground giving way beneath one's feet.
Senses
1. slip, slide, totter (Qal) — The Qal stem covers slipping, sliding, and tottering — always with feet or steps as subject. The psalmist's confidence that his feet 'have not slipped' (2 Sam 22:37 = Ps 18:36) and that his steps 'shall not slide' (Ps 37:31) form a theology of stability grounded in divine faithfulness. Spanish 'resbalaron' (they slipped) and French 'glisser' reinforce the physical sliding image that underlies the metaphorical assurance. 5×

2. make totter, shake (Hiphil) — The Hiphil causative means to make someone totter or shake, attested only in Ps 69:23 where the psalmist prays that God cause the enemies' loins to tremble continually. Spanish 'haz tambalear' (make stagger) and German 'machen zu erschüttern' (cause to shake) both highlight the forceful, causative dimension distinct from the simple Qal. 1×
