N-fs  |  5× in 1 sense
flat plate, griddle, or pan for baking grain offerings; also an iron plate used symbolically as a siege wall
The מַחֲבַת is a flat baking surface used primarily for preparing the grain offering (minḥah). Leviticus specifies that offerings made on the griddle are distinct from those prepared in a deep pan (2:5; 6:14; 7:9), and 1 Chronicles 23:29 lists griddle-cakes among Levitical provisions. In Ezekiel 4:3, an iron מַחֲבַת serves a strikingly different purpose: the prophet places it as a symbolic iron wall between himself and a model of besieged Jerusalem. Spanish sartén ('frying pan') and French poêle ('skillet') both point to a flat cooking surface.

Senses
1. sense 1 A flat baking plate or griddle for preparing grain offerings. Leviticus 2:5, 6:14, and 7:9 prescribe the griddle-baked minḥah as a distinct offering type, distinguished from deep-pan preparations. First Chronicles 23:29 includes griddle-cakes in the Levitical service inventory. Spanish sartén and French poêle consistently render a flat cooking implement. In Ezekiel 4:3, the same word designates an iron plate set up as a symbolic siege wall between the prophet and a clay model of Jerusalem — extending the flat-surface concept from culinary to prophetic-dramatic use.
