To complete or finish (Aramaic); used exclusively of completing construction of the Jerusalem temple and its walls.
An Aramaic verb found only in Ezra 4-6, where it describes the completion of building projects in post-exilic Jerusalem. Every occurrence relates to the reconstruction of the temple or the city walls under Persian-period authorization. The Shaph'el (causative) stem conveys actively bringing a project to completion, while the Ishtaph'el (passive-reflexive) describes walls 'being completed.' Spanish renders it aptly with terminar and completar, capturing the sense of finishing what was begun. The word may be a loanword from Akkadian suklulu ('to bring to perfection'), linking Babylonian administrative vocabulary to the Persian-era rebuilding narrative.
Senses
1. complete, finish (Hifil/Pual: bring to completion) — To complete or finish a construction project, attested exclusively in the Aramaic sections of Ezra regarding the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple and city walls. In the active Shaph'el stem: 'they finished it' (Ezra 5:11; 6:14) and 'they completed the walls' (Ezra 4:12); in the Ishtaph'el passive: 'the walls will be completed' (Ezra 4:13, 16). The infinitive form appears in official correspondence asking about authorization 'to finish' the temple (Ezra 5:3, 9). Possibly borrowed from Akkadian suklulu, connecting Persian-era administrative language to the theological drama of temple restoration. 6×
