Cushite — a person or people from the land of Cush (biblical Ethiopia/Nubia), used as gentilic noun or adjective
Derived from Cush (כּוּשׁ), this gentilic term identifies individuals or peoples originating from the region south of Egypt, roughly corresponding to ancient Nubia and Ethiopia. Its most dramatic narrative use is the unnamed Cushite messenger who carries the news of Absalom's death to David (2 Sam 18:21-32). Moses' Cushite wife provokes Miriam and Aaron's challenge in Numbers 12:1. The rhetorical question 'Can the Cushite change his skin?' (Jer 13:23) appeals to the Cushites' distinctive dark complexion as something visibly inherent. French and German renderings ('Éthiopien,' 'Kuschiter') preserve the geographic link to the classical world's Aithiopia.

The feminine כֻּשִׁית appears only for Moses' wife (Num 12:1). 23×
