Wake up, awake — to rouse from sleep, used of natural waking and metaphorical arousal from stupor
The verb יָקַץ (yaqats) means to wake up or awaken from sleep, typically in the Qal stem. It describes the moment of transition from sleep to waking consciousness, often at narratively pivotal points: Noah awoke from his wine and learned what Ham had done (Gen 9:24), Jacob awoke at Bethel declaring 'Surely YHWH is in this place' (Gen 28:16), and Pharaoh awoke from his prophetic dreams (Gen 41:4, 7, 21). Solomon's famous dream-judgment ends with his awakening (1 Kgs 3:15). The verb also carries figurative overtones in wisdom literature, as when the righteous person awakes to find the wicked's prosperity vanished (Ps 73:20). Spanish 'despertó' and French 'se réveilla' render it consistently.
Senses
1. to awake, wake up (Qal) — To awaken or rouse from sleep, marking the transition from unconsciousness to alertness, often at narratively charged moments. Noah awakes to discover Ham's act (Gen 9:24), Jacob awakes at Bethel with a theophanic revelation (Gen 28:16), Pharaoh awakes from prophetic dreams (Gen 41:4, 7, 21), Samson awakes unaware his strength has departed (Judg 16:14, 20), and Solomon awakes after his dream at Gibeon (1 Kgs 3:15). Used figuratively of God 'as one awaking from sleep' (Ps 78:65) and of eschatological awakening (Jer 51:39, 57). Spanish 'despertar' and German 'erwachen' match its core sense precisely. 10×
