טוּל H2904
To hurl, cast, throw forcefully; (passive) to be hurled or cast down; to be overthrown
A Hebrew verb of violent motion whose root imagery is the powerful flinging of an object or person. Saul hurls his spear at David (1 Sam 18:11; 20:33), Jeremiah warns of exile as God hurling his people into a foreign land (Jer 16:13; 22:26), and Isaiah pictures God violently tossing a man like a ball (Isa 22:17). The Pilpel intensification in that Isaiah passage — 'hurleth thee violently' — captures the raw force latent in the root. Spanish arrojar and French jeter both preserve the sense of forceful ejection. In its passive Hofal forms, the word shifts to describe the experience of being hurled or toppled, whether the lot cast into the lap (Prov 16:33) or the warrior cast down but not abandoned (Ps 37:24).
Senses
1. hurl, cast, throw — The active sense of hurling, casting, or throwing something or someone with force. Saul hurls his spear at David (1 Sam 18:11, 20:33), God hurls Israel into exile (Jer 16:13, 22:26), and Ezekiel pictures a body cast upon open ground (Ezek 32:4). The Pilpel form in Isaiah 22:17 intensifies the violence. Spanish arrojar, French hurler/jeter, and Hindi phenkna all confirm the core meaning of forceful projection. The verb governs both physical objects (javelins, cargo in Jonah 1:5) and persons (exile as metaphorical hurling). 10×

2. be hurled, be cast — The passive sense of being thrown or cast, rendered in the Hofal stem. The lot is cast into the lap (Prov 16:33), and Jeremiah's treacherous allies are described as hurled away (Jer 22:28). Spanish es echada and fueron arrojados preserve the passive voice. The sense remains physical and literal — the subject receives the force of being thrown rather than initiating it. 2×

3. be cast down, be overthrown — A figurative extension of the passive: to be cast down, overthrown, or brought low, with emphasis on defeat or humiliation rather than mere physical displacement. Job 41:9 asks whether Leviathan's opponent is hurled down at the mere sight of it, and Psalm 37:24 reassures that the righteous may be cast down but not utterly abandoned. The shift from literal hurling to metaphorical overthrow is marked in several translations — Spanish sera derribado ('will be overthrown') rather than simply 'thrown.' 2×
