breastpiece — the sacred pouch on the high priest's chest, set with twelve gemstones and the Urim and Thummim
Choshen designates the high-priestly breastpiece (or 'breastplate of judgment'), one of the most elaborately described ritual objects in the Torah. All 25 occurrences fall within the Priestly source in Exodus and Leviticus, concentrated in the instructions for the tabernacle vestments (Exod 28) and their execution (Exod 39). The breastpiece was a square pouch, a span on each side, woven from the same gold-threaded, multicolored fabric as the ephod. Its face bore twelve precious stones in four rows, each engraved with the name of one of Israel's tribes — a visible memorial carried 'over Aaron's heart' when he entered the Holy Place (Exod 28:29). Inside the pouch rested the Urim and Thummim, the instruments of divine oracular consultation, which is why the breastpiece bore the formal title choshen hammishpat, 'the breastpiece of judgment' (Exod 28:15, 30). Gold chains fastened it to the ephod's shoulder-pieces, and a blue cord secured its lower edge to the ephod's sash. Spanish 'pectoral,' French 'pectoral,' and German 'Brustschild' all convey the chest-worn sacral object.

Senses
1. breastpiece, breastplate of judgment The sacred pouch-like ornament worn on the high priest's chest, set with four rows of three precious stones representing the twelve tribes and containing the Urim and Thummim for oracular inquiry. Called choshen hammishpat ('breastpiece of judgment') in Exod 28:15, 30. It was attached to the ephod by gold chains at the shoulders and a blue ribbon at the waist (Exod 28:22-28; 39:8-21). Every occurrence belongs to the Priestly tabernacle instructions or their fulfillment (Exod 25:7; 28:4-30; 29:5; 35:9, 27; 39:8-21; Lev 8:8). Spanish and French 'pectoral' and German 'Brustschild' confirm a single referent. 25×
