companion, fellow; Aramaic
An Aramaic noun for comrade or associate. It appears in Daniel's account of the dream crisis: the decree to kill 'Daniel and his companions' (Dan 2:13), and Daniel's plea for 'mercy concerning this mystery for Daniel and his companions' (Dan 2:17, 18). The Spanish sus compañeros and French/German cognates all denote social and professional peers. This is the language of solidarity: those who share Daniel's fate and faith, standing together before the king's decree.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Refers to Daniel's companions (Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah) in three contexts of crisis and prayer (Dan 2:13, 17, 18). The multilingual glosses (companions, compañeros, חברוהי) uniformly reflect association and fellowship. The word evokes shared risk and mutual support: those bound together by circumstance and covenant. 3×
