V-Qal-Perf-3ms  |  1× in 1 sense
To stretch out or extend (the hand); to reach forth toward something
This verb describes the action of extending one's hand, appearing in Isaiah's prophecy of the peaceable kingdom. The image depicts a weaned child stretching out his hand over a viper's den without harm—a picture of the transformation of nature under Messiah's reign. Aramaic and Arabic cognates relate to leading or guiding, but here the focus is simply on the physical act of reaching out. This single use creates one of Scripture's most beloved images of eschatological peace, where even the most vulnerable can safely interact with the most dangerous.

Senses
1. sense 1 Isaiah 11:8 prophesies: 'The weaned child shall stretch out his hand over the adder's den.' This vision of a child fearlessly reaching toward a poisonous snake symbolizes the complete reversal of the curse in Messiah's kingdom. The verb emphasizes the deliberate, unafraid action of extending the hand—no recoiling in terror. Combined with other images in the passage (wolf and lamb, leopard and goat), this creates a comprehensive picture of restored harmony between humanity and creation, reversing the enmity introduced by the fall.
