wing, wings (Aramaic)—the wings of beasts in Daniel's visions
This Aramaic noun for wing(s) appears only in Daniel's apocalyptic visions of symbolic beasts. The first beast (representing Babylon) had eagle's wings that were plucked (Dan 7:4, twice). The third beast (representing Greece) had four bird wings on its back (Dan 7:6). The word is the Aramaic cognate of Hebrew kanaf and Syriac gepa. Wings in these visions symbolize swift conquest and imperial power. The variety of wing configurations on different beasts communicates their distinctive characteristics and the manner of their dominion.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Aramaic noun for wing or wings, appearing three times in Daniel 7's beast visions. Daniel 7:4 mentions wings twice: first 'its wings' (singular suffix in Qere, gapah; plural in Ketiv, gapayh) of the first beast, then 'wings' being plucked. Daniel 7:6 describes four wings on the leopard-like beast. Cross-linguistic glosses show: English 'wings/its wings/and wings,' Spanish 'alas/alas de ella/y alas' (wings/wings of it/and wings), French and German use placeholder brackets for the Aramaic forms. The plural form gappin and suffixed forms indicate morphological variation. This is apocalyptic vocabulary for symbolic animal features representing imperial characteristics. 3×
