To reveal, disclose hidden things (Aramaic); also: to exile, deport (Hebrew Haphel/Hiphil)
An Aramaic verb appearing in the biblical text with two sharply distinct senses drawn from related but divergent semantic developments. In Daniel 2, gela' means 'to reveal' or 'to disclose' -- God is celebrated as the one who 'reveals deep and hidden things' (Dan 2:22), who 'revealed the mystery to Daniel in a night vision' (Dan 2:19). Spanish captures this beautifully with 'revela' and 'fue revelado.' The second sense, attested in Ezra 4:10 and 5:12, is the Haphel form meaning 'to exile, carry into captivity' -- referring to Nebuchadnezzar's deportation of Judah. Both senses derive from the root galah ('to uncover'), but the semantic distance between revealing secrets and forcing populations into exile is striking.

Senses
1. to reveal, disclose (Aramaic) To reveal, disclose, or make known hidden things -- Aramaic Pe'al and Pe'il forms used exclusively in Daniel 2:19-47. God is the agent of revelation: the Pe'al participle gale' ('revealer') appears in Dan 2:22 ('He reveals deep and hidden things') and Dan 2:28-29 ('there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries'). The Pe'il (passive) form geli describes the mystery as 'revealed' to Daniel (Dan 2:19, 30). Spanish 'revela' and 'fue revelado' map naturally to the active and passive; English similarly distinguishes 'revealing' from 'was-revealed.'

2. to exile, carry into captivity (Hifil) To exile or carry into captivity -- Haphel (Aramaic causative) perfect form hagli, attested in Ezra 4:10 and 5:12. Refers to the Babylonian deportation: Nebuchadnezzar 'exiled' the people of Judah to Babylon. English renders 'exiled,' Spanish 'desterro' (banished). Though sharing the root galah ('to uncover') with the revelatory sense, this meaning develops from the idea of 'uncovering' a land -- stripping it of its inhabitants. The domain shift from cognition (revealing) to forced movement (deportation) is one of the more dramatic semantic splits in biblical Aramaic.
