1. head, poll (unit of counting) — The head or poll as a unit for counting individuals in a census or assessment. Hebrew gulgōlet in this sense functions as a distributive measure meaning 'per head' or 'per capita,' used in census-taking contexts in Numbers 1 (tribal military enrollment) and 1 Chronicles 23 (Levitical census), as well as Exodus 16:16 and 38:26 for the per-person measure of manna and the half-shekel census tax. Used in Judges 9:53 where a woman drops a millstone on Abimelech's skull (gulgaltō), in 2 Kings 9:35 where only Jezebel's skull, feet, and palms remain after being consumed by dogs, and in 1 Chronicles 10:10 where the Philistines fasten Saul's skull in the temple of Dagon.
