Growing great, increasing; used as a participle meaning 'becoming great' or as an adjective meaning 'large, great'
A Qal active participle of gadal ('to be great') that captures the dynamic process of growing or becoming great. In Genesis 26:13 it describes Isaac's increasing prosperity — he 'went on growing' until he became very wealthy. In 1 Samuel 2:26 the young Samuel 'continued growing' in stature and favor, a phrase later echoed of Jesus in Luke 2:52. In 2 Chronicles 17:12 Jehoshaphat 'grew increasingly great.' The sole non-progressive use appears in Ezekiel 16:26, where the construct phrase 'great of flesh' carries a more physical, even coarse connotation.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Becoming great, growing progressively in size, wealth, or stature. In Gen 26:13 Isaac 'kept growing' (halokh vegadel) in a vivid progressive construction. In 1 Sam 2:26 the boy Samuel 'continued growing' in both physical stature and divine-human favor — Spanish 'y-creciendo' and French 'et-croissant' both capture the ongoing aspect. In 2 Chr 17:12 Jehoshaphat similarly 'grew increasingly great.' The exceptional use in Ezek 16:26 ('great of flesh,' gidlei basar) shifts from progressive growth to static physical description, likely a euphemism for sexual endowment in the prophetic allegory. 4×
