Conj-w | V-Piel-ConjPerf-2ms  |  28× in 2 senses
To boil or cook food in liquid (Piel); to ripen or reach maturity of fruit or harvest (Qal/Hifil).
A verb rooted in the application of heat, whether by human hands in the kitchen or by the sun upon the vine. In its most common usage (Piel), it describes the act of boiling or cooking meat and other foods in liquid, as in the prohibition against boiling a kid in its mother's milk (Exod 23:19). When the Qal stem appears, the meaning shifts to natural ripening -- the harvest that has grown ripe and ready for the sickle (Joel 3:13). Spanish distinguishes these neatly: cocerás (you shall cook) versus maduró (it ripened), and German similarly separates kochen from reifen.

Senses
1. cook, boil The culinary act of cooking or boiling food by heating it in liquid, used predominantly in the Piel stem for active cooking and Pual for passive being-cooked. Covers sacrificial preparation (Exod 29:31), ordinary meal-making (2 Sam 13:8), and even the harrowing image of mothers cooking their own children in siege (Lam 4:10). Spanish consistently renders cocerás/cocieron, while French uses cuire. 25×

2. ripen, become ripe The natural process of fruit or grain reaching full maturity, an extension from the heat-of-cooking domain to the warmth of the sun bringing produce to ripeness. Joel 3:13 summons the sickle because the harvest is ripe (bashal), and Gen 40:10 describes grapes ripening on the vine. Spanish maduró and German reifen capture this botanical sense distinctly from the culinary meaning.
