Cypress tree — a tall conifer prized for timber in temple building and shipmaking
Refers to the cypress (or possibly fir or juniper), a stately conifer that grew on the mountains of Lebanon and was highly valued for its fine, durable wood. Solomon imported cypress timber alongside cedar for the construction of the temple (1 Kgs 5:8, 10; 6:15, 34), and it was used for musical instruments at celebrations (2 Sam 6:5). The precise botanical identification has been debated since antiquity — the Septuagint and Syriac favor cypress, while Jerome's Vulgate leans toward fir or pine — but the Hebrew Bible consistently treats it as a premier building timber second only to cedar.

Senses
1. cypress tree The cypress tree (בְּרוֹשׁ), a tall conifer of the Lebanon and surrounding regions whose timber was highly esteemed for sacred and royal construction. David's musicians played instruments of cypress wood (2 Sam 6:5); Solomon ordered cypress alongside cedar for the temple floors and doors (1 Kgs 5:8–10; 6:15, 34). Spanish uniformly renders 'ciprés/cipreses,' while French and German sometimes leave the Hebrew untransliterated, reflecting ongoing botanical uncertainty. Hosea 14:9 uses the evergreen cypress as a metaphor for God's faithful provision. 20×
