Chosen one, elect; always of those selected by God for a special purpose or covenant relationship.
An adjective used substantively to designate a person or people chosen by God. Every occurrence carries theological weight: it is never used of merely human selection. In Isaiah 42:1 God declares 'my chosen one' of the Servant; in Isaiah 65:9, 15, 22 the faithful remnant are his elect; and the Psalms repeatedly celebrate Israel as God's chosen people (Ps 89:3; 105:6, 43; 106:5, 23). French 'élu' and Spanish 'escogidos' both capture the idea of divine election—a deliberate, covenantal act of selection, not mere preference.
