Ashima (deity worshiped by people from Hamath, settled in Samaria)
When Assyria resettled foreigners in conquered Samaria, colonists from Hamath brought worship of Ashima, a deity otherwise unknown in ancient Near Eastern records. This syncretistic importation contributed to the religious confusion that made the Samaritan region detestable to returning Jewish exiles. The name appears nowhere else in biblical or extrabiblical literature.

Senses
1. sense 1 Divine name denoting a god worshiped by Hamathites transplanted to Samaria according to 2 Kings 17:30. The passage condemns the proliferation of foreign deities in Israel's former heartland following Assyrian deportation policies. Total absence of Ashima from other ancient sources makes this deity's nature and cult entirely obscure beyond this single reference.
