Aloes; a fragrant tree or aromatic spice derived from it
Refers to an aromatic tree or its fragrant product, traditionally identified with aloeswood (aloexylon agallochum), prized across the ancient Near East for its perfume. Balaam's oracle compares Israel's tents to aloe trees planted by the LORD beside flowing waters (Num 24:6). Elsewhere it appears alongside myrrh and cassia as a luxury perfume — anointing royal robes (Ps 45:8), scenting a lover's bed (Prov 7:17), and listed among the choicest spices of the garden in Song 4:14.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Aloe trees or aloes as fragrant aromatic material. Every available translation converges on a single sense: English 'aloes,' Spanish 'áloes,' French 'aloès,' and German 'aloes' all agree. In Numbers 24:6 the plural designates aromatic trees (parallel to cedars), while in Psalms 45:8, Proverbs 7:17, and Song of Songs 4:14 the reference is to the costly perfume extracted from such wood, used to scent garments and living spaces. 4×
