Fresh ears of grain (barley); also the month Abib (= Nisan), the first month of the Hebrew calendar when ears ripen.
Aviv connects the agricultural calendar to Israel's salvation history. The word fundamentally refers to fresh, young ears of barley just beginning to form -- the stage before full ripeness (Exod 9:31, Lev 2:14). This agricultural reality gave its name to the first month of the Hebrew year, the month of the Exodus and Passover (Exod 13:4, 23:15, 34:18, Deut 16:1), later called Nisan in the post-exilic period. The Spanish 'espiga' (ear of grain) for the concrete sense and 'Aviv' for the month name reflect this dual usage well.
Senses
1. Abib, month of ripening — The month Abib (Aviv), the first month of the Hebrew calendar corresponding roughly to March-April, when barley ears begin to ripen. It is the month of the Exodus and the Passover festival. Exodus 13:4 records: 'Today you are going out, in the month of Abib.' The article ha-Aviv marks it as the definitive month name. Spanish preserves both 'Aviv' and 'la espiga' (the ear of grain), hinting at the agricultural etymology. After the Exile, this month was called Nisan (Neh 2:1, Esth 3:7). 6×

2. fresh ears of grain — Fresh, young ears of barley or grain that have formed on the stalk but are not yet fully ripe. In Exodus 9:31, the flax and barley were destroyed by the seventh plague because the barley was 'in the ear' (aviv). Leviticus 2:14 prescribes an offering of firstfruits: fresh ears roasted with fire (aviv qalui ba-esh). The Spanish 'espigas' (ears of grain) and French 'fresh-grain' convey this concrete agricultural sense that underlies the month name. 2×
