ψευδόχριστος G5580
false Christ, one who falsely claims to be the Messiah
ψευδόχριστος (from ψευδής 'false' + Χριστός 'Christ') denotes someone who falsely claims to be the Messiah—a pretender to messianic identity. Jesus uses it in his eschatological discourse warning about deception in the last days. Both Matthew 24:24 and Mark 13:22 record his warning: 'False christs (ψευδόχριστοι) and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.' These deceivers will be so convincing, with such powerful signs, that even genuine believers might be vulnerable to their claims. Jesus warns his disciples to be alert and not follow those claiming messianic identity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both occurrences appear in parallel Gospel accounts of Jesus' Olivet Discourse, warning about end-times deception. The ψευδόχριστοι will be persuasive, working signs and wonders to authenticate their false claims. The German falscher Christus and Spanish falsos cristos preserve the compound meaning. Jesus' warning is urgent: messianic pretenders will arise throughout church history and especially near the end, and their miraculous signs will make them dangerously convincing. Believers must test claims against Scripture and apostolic witness, not merely against displays of power. 2×
