χλωρός G5515
Green, pale green, or ashen pale; describing vegetation's verdant color or the pallor of death.
An adjective spanning the color range from fresh green to sickly pale -- a spectrum ancient Greek perceived as a single continuum of light, yellowish-green hue. In Mark 6:39 Jesus seats the crowd on the green grass, evoking the lush Galilean spring. In Revelation 9:4 the locusts are forbidden to harm any green thing. But in Revelation 6:8 the fourth horseman rides a chlōros horse -- the pale, deathly greenish hue of a corpse. Spanish captures this duality with verde (green) alongside verde-pálido (pale green), while French vert and German grün tend toward the verdant end.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Describing the fresh green color of living vegetation. In Mark 6:39 the crowd sits on the green grass before the feeding of the five thousand, and in Revelation 9:4 the demonic locusts are restrained from destroying any green plant or tree. Spanish verde and French vert straightforwardly render this botanical sense of vibrant, living greenness. 4×
