χῐτών G5509
Tunic, inner garment — the basic garment worn next to the skin, distinct from the outer cloak (ἱμάτιον)
The noun χιτών (chitōn) designates the tunic worn directly against the body, distinct from the outer cloak (ἱμάτιον). Jesus teaches radical generosity: do not withhold your tunic from the one suing for your cloak (Matt 5:40; Luke 6:29). Missionaries are to carry no spare (Matt 10:10; Mark 6:9). John the Baptist demands sharing tunics with the needy (Luke 3:11). The high priest tears his garments at Jesus' trial (Mark 14:63), and Tabitha's friends display the tunics she sewed for widows (Acts 9:39). Spanish 'túnica' and Arabic قَمِيص preserve the reference.
