Chara is the Greek noun for joy, derived from the same root as the common greeting chairein ('rejoice'). In the New Testament it carries a distinctly theological coloring: it is the response to the angel's announcement of Jesus' birth (Matt 2:10, 'exceedingly great joy'), the immediate fruit of receiving the gospel message (Matt 13:20, 44), and a hallmark of life in the Spirit (Gal 5:22, listed first among the fruit of the Spirit). Jesus speaks of his own joy being made complete in his disciples (John 15:11; 17:13), and Paul repeatedly urges joy even amid suffering (Phil 1:4, 25; 2:2). The word also describes the eschatological reward of faithfulness: 'Enter into the joy of your master' (Matt 25:21, 23). Spanish gozo, French joie, and German Freude all consistently render this single term, confirming its semantic unity across the full range of contexts.
