lump (of dough) — a mass of mixed or kneaded material, used literally and as a metaphor for a community
Phyrama refers to a lump of kneaded dough, from phyrao ('to mix, knead'). While the word has a straightforward culinary origin, every New Testament occurrence deploys it metaphorically. Paul uses the potter's lump in Romans 9:21 to argue God's sovereign right over his creation, while in Romans 11:16 the consecrated firstfruits sanctify the whole batch. The leaven metaphor in 1 Corinthians 5:6-7 and Galatians 5:9 warns that a small amount of corruption permeates the entire community. The Spanish 'masa' (dough/mass) and German 'Teig' (dough) capture both the literal and figurative potential of the word.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A batch or lump of kneaded dough, used in the NT exclusively in figurative contexts to represent a collective body — whether a community subject to moral influence (1 Cor 5:6-7, Gal 5:9, 'a little leaven leavens the whole lump'), a people whose firstfruits consecrate the whole (Rom 11:16), or clay in the potter's hand representing humanity under divine sovereignty (Rom 9:21). The French 'pate' and Spanish 'masa' reflect the primary baking sense from which all the metaphors derive. 5×
