φῐλί-α G5373
N-NFS  |  1× in 1 sense
Friendship, affectionate regard, the bond of mutual love and goodwill between persons
Friendship stands as one of life's great goods—unless it becomes friendship with the world. James 4:4 employs this term in a startling declaration: φιλία with the world means enmity with God. Classical Greek celebrated friendship as the bond uniting souls, distinguishing it from eros and family affection (στοργή). The New Testament doesn't depreciate friendship itself but interrogates its object: what world are we befriending? When our affections align with systems opposed to God, friendship becomes betrayal. The singular biblical occurrence transforms a positive relational term into a diagnostic question about allegiance.

Senses
1. sense 1 Friendship, affectionate regard and bond between persons characterized by mutual love and goodwill. James 4:4's sole New Testament usage employs it surprisingly: 'friendship with the world is enmity with God.' Classical Greek distinguished φιλία from erotic love and family affection, celebrating it as chosen kinship. James's warning doesn't dismiss friendship but questions its object—alignment with worldly values constitutes spiritual adultery, transforming a virtue into vice through misdirection.
