Later, afterward, finally — a temporal adverb marking subsequent or concluding position in a sequence of events
The adverb ὕστερον (hysteron) marks what comes later, afterward, or last in a sequence. In Matthew's parables it structures narrative climax: the second son 'afterward' repented and went (Matt 21:29), the religious leaders did not 'afterward' believe (21:32), and 'last of all' the owner sent his son (21:37). The foolish virgins arrive 'afterward' to find the door shut (Matt 25:11), and two false witnesses 'at last' came forward at Jesus' trial (Matt 26:60). The word often carries a note of finality or missed opportunity — what comes late may come too late. Spanish 'después' and French 'ensuite' both convey this sequential positioning.
