V-PPA-NMS  |  2× in 1 sense
to withdraw, retire, go back, retreat
This verb means to go back, retire, or withdraw from a place or situation. Both Gospel uses describe Jesus withdrawing from crowds or situations to seek solitude. In Luke 5, after healing a leper and facing growing crowds, Jesus withdrew to desolate places to pray. In Luke 9, he withdrew from Herod's territory after the feeding of the 5,000. The pattern shows Jesus' rhythm of ministry and withdrawal for communion with the Father.

Senses
1. sense 1 Classical ὑποχωρέω described retiring or withdrawing (often in military contexts or giving way). Luke employs it for Jesus' strategic withdrawals: Luke 5:16 notes he 'would withdraw to desolate places and pray' (ὑποχωρῶν ἐν ταῖς ἐρήμοις), creating space for prayer amid mounting popularity. Luke 9:10 has Jesus withdrawing privately (ὑπεχώρησεν) after the 5,000's feeding—both passages showing Jesus' deliberate rhythm of public ministry and private renewal.
