hyperballo -- to surpass, exceed, or go beyond all measure; to be extraordinary in degree
The verb hyperballo (literally 'to throw beyond') is used exclusively by Paul, and always in participial form, to describe realities that exceed any standard of comparison. It is a word reserved for the superlative: the surpassing glory of the new covenant eclipses that of the old (2 Cor 3:10), the surpassing grace of God overflows toward the Corinthians (2 Cor 9:14), and the surpassing greatness of God's power works in believers (Eph 1:19). Spanish sobrepasante, French surpasser, and German ueberragend all attempt to capture this 'beyond-all-measure' quality. The English word 'hyperbole' descends directly from this root.
