ὑμν-έω G5214
To sing a hymn, chant praise, or celebrate God in song; liturgical worship through vocal music.
Describes the act of singing sacred praise, whether in formal worship or spontaneous devotion. At the Last Supper (Matt 26:30; Mark 14:26), Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn before going out to the Mount of Olives — almost certainly the Hallel psalms (Ps 113-118). In Acts 16:25, Paul and Silas were 'singing hymns' to God at midnight in a Philippian jail, and Hebrews 2:12 quotes Psalm 22:22 where the Messiah declares 'I will sing your praise.' The German 'lobsingen' beautifully captures the compound idea of praise-singing that this Greek verb conveys.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To sing praise or chant a hymn in worship of God, whether in corporate liturgy or personal devotion. Matt 26:30 and Mark 14:26 describe Jesus and the disciples singing after the Passover meal, almost certainly the Hallel psalms. Acts 16:25 shows Paul and Silas singing hymns in prison at midnight, and Heb 2:12 places the verb on the lips of the Messiah himself via Ps 22:22. The German 'lobsingen' (praise-sing) and French 'chanter des hymnes' both highlight the specifically sacred and laudatory character of the singing. 4×
