To run; literally of swift movement on foot, figuratively of striving in the race of faith or of a message spreading.
Trecho is one of the most kinetic verbs in the New Testament. In the Gospels it captures raw physical urgency: the women run from the empty tomb (Matt 28:8), the father runs to embrace his prodigal son (Luke 15:20), Peter and the beloved disciple race to the grave (John 20:2-4). Paul then seizes the athletic image for the spiritual life, drawing on the Greek stadium: 'I have run the race' (Gal 2:2; Phil 2:16). Hebrews 12:1 urges believers to 'run with endurance.' In one striking extension, Paul prays that 'the word of the Lord may run' -- may spread swiftly and unhindered (2 Thess 3:1).

1. run physically — To run physically -- swift bodily movement toward or away from something. A bystander runs to fill a sponge with vinegar (Matt 27:48; Mark 15:36); the women run from the tomb in trembling joy (Matt 28:8); a demoniac runs and bows before Jesus (Mark 5:6); the father of the prodigal runs to embrace him (Luke 15:20). 2. strive in a race — To strive in a race -- the metaphorical use drawn from Greek athletic competition. Paul asks the Galatians 'who hindered you from running well?' (Gal 5:7) and declares he did not 'run in vain' (Gal 2:2; Phil 2:16). Hebrews 12:1, with its stadium imagery of witnesses, urges 'let us run with endurance.'
