τοσοῦτος G5118
So much, so many, so great; a demonstrative of quantity, number, or degree.
Tosoutos is a correlative demonstrative pronoun that points emphatically at quantity or degree -- 'this many,' 'this much,' 'this great.' It often carries a note of wonder or rebuke: how could so many signs not produce faith (John 12:37)? Have you been with me so long and still not known me (John 14:9)? The author of Hebrews uses it in comparisons -- Christ is 'by so much' superior to angels (Heb 1:4) -- and the great cloud of witnesses is 'so great' (Heb 12:1). Its emotional coloring makes it more than a mere number word; it registers astonishment.
Senses
1. so many, such a number — So many -- referring to a countable plurality whose impressive number is being highlighted. Jesus marvels that so many loaves cannot feed the crowd (Matt 15:33); the elder son protests he served so many years (Luke 15:29); despite so many signs, the crowd did not believe (John 12:37). Spanish 'tantos/tantas' and French 'tant' both capture the emphatic count. Eight occurrences carry this discrete-quantity force. 8×

2. so much, to such degree — So much, to such a degree -- quantifying something uncountable or abstract, often in correlative constructions. Ananias sells land 'for so much' (Acts 5:8); Christ is superior 'by so much' as his name surpasses the angels (Heb 1:4; 7:22). Spanish 'tanto mas' and the repeated comparative structures mark degree rather than count. Seven occurrences emphasize this scalar, non-discrete usage. 7×

3. so great, such magnitude — So great, of such magnitude -- emphasizing the impressive size or quality of something. The centurion's faith is 'so great' that Jesus marvels (Matt 8:10; cf. Luke 7:9); the cloud of witnesses is 'so great' (Heb 12:1); Babylon's riches are destroyed in one hour -- 'so great' wealth laid waste (Rev 18:17). Spanish 'tan grande' and German 'so gross' show the qualitative-magnitude dimension. Five occurrences carry this sense. 5×
