σωτήρ-ιος G4992
Saving, bringing salvation or deliverance; as a substantive, the means or instrument of God's saving act.
This adjective means 'bringing salvation' or 'saving,' and in the NT it appears almost exclusively as a substantive referring to God's saving power made visible. Simeon cradles the infant Jesus and declares, 'My eyes have seen your salvation' (Luke 2:30). Isaiah's prophecy that 'all flesh shall see the salvation of God' echoes through Luke 3:6 and Acts 28:28. In Ephesians 6:17 it becomes the 'helmet of salvation,' and in Titus 2:11 the grace of God appears as 'saving' for all people. French 'salutaire' (health-giving, saving) and Spanish 'salvadora' nicely capture the active, delivering quality.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Saving, bringing deliverance — used substantively to denote God's salvation made manifest. Simeon sees God's 'saving instrument' in the Christ child (Luke 2:30); the Isaianic promise that all flesh will see God's salvation is quoted at Luke 3:6 and Acts 28:28 to frame the gospel's universal scope. Ephesians 6:17 uses it concretely as the 'helmet of salvation' in spiritual armor, while Titus 2:11 describes God's grace as 'saving' for all humanity. French 'salutaire' and Spanish 'salvación/salvadora' reflect both the adjectival quality (health-bringing) and the substantival force (the saving act itself). 5×
