συναυξ-άνω G4885
To grow together, increase jointly in size or number alongside something else
To grow up together, to increase alongside something else. In Matthew 13:30, Jesus's parable instructs servants to 'let both grow together until the harvest'—wheat and weeds are to coexist until the final separation. The word emphasizes simultaneous, parallel growth: both are increasing in the same field at the same time. Jesus interprets this as the church age, when righteous and wicked grow together in the world until judgment. Premature separation would damage the wheat; only at harvest can perfect distinction be made. The command to let them grow together counsels patience with imperfect church purity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The coexistence of wheat and weeds in Jesus's parable, both permitted to mature until harvest-time separation. Spanish 'crecer juntos' (grow together), French 'croître ensemble' (grow together), German transcribes the Greek. The parable warns against zealous attempts to purify the church prematurely—human judgment can't yet perfectly distinguish true from false, and efforts to root out the wicked may harm the righteous. Only God's eschatological judgment can achieve perfect separation. 1×
