συμπάρ-ειμι G4840
To be present with, stand beside someone; to be in attendance together
To be present alongside someone, to stand by or accompany. In Acts 25:24, Festus presents Paul before King Agrippa and 'all who are present with us,' referring to the assembled Jewish leaders and Roman officials. The word indicates physical presence and often implies supportive attendance—standing with someone in both spatial and relational senses. Classical usage included advocates being present with their clients or representatives standing in for others. Luke's usage simply marks the gathered assembly, the public nature of Paul's defense.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The collective presence of Jewish and Roman authorities at Paul's hearing before Agrippa. They are 'present with' Festus, forming an official assembly to hear the case. Spanish 'presentes con' (present with) and French 'être présent avec' (to be present with) capture the accompaniment sense, while German simply transcribes the Greek. Their presence creates the public forum where Paul will defend himself and proclaim the gospel. 1×
