To grieve with, share in another's pain; to be sympathetically distressed
To grieve together with someone, to feel sympathetic pain at another's suffering. In Mark 3:5, Jesus looks at the Pharisees 'grieved at their hardness of heart.' The word captures Jesus's emotional response to their stubborn refusal to rejoice that a man's withered hand was about to be healed on the Sabbath. This is not anger alone but sorrowful pain at the spiritual blindness that prevents them from celebrating mercy. The 'shared grief' element suggests Jesus suffers with them over their own condition.

Senses
1. sense 1 Jesus's grief over the Pharisees' hardened hearts, a compassionate pain at their spiritual state. Spanish 'entristecido' (saddened) and German 'mitbetrübt sein' (co-grieved) capture the sympathetic dimension, while French 'être attristé' (be saddened) emphasizes the emotional state. Mark's detail reveals Jesus's complex response: anger at injustice mingled with grief at what sin has done to these religious leaders. His sorrow is itself an act of identification with their loss.
