Cheek or jaw; the fleshy side of the face, symbolic of personal honor in ancient Near Eastern culture
Σιαγών refers to the jawbone or cheek, particularly in contexts involving personal honor and insult. In ancient Mediterranean culture, striking someone's cheek was a profound humiliation—not primarily about physical pain but about shame and social degradation. Jesus radically redefines honor culture in the Sermon on the Mount/Plain by commanding his followers to turn the other cheek when struck. This teaching doesn't advocate passivity but challenges the entire system of retaliation and honor-preservation. Offering the other cheek exposes the aggressor's injustice and refuses to participate in cycles of violence.

Senses
1. sense 1 Both Matthew 5:39 and Luke 6:29 record Jesus' teaching about turning the other cheek, though in slightly different contexts (Matthew in the Sermon on the Mount, Luke on level ground). The parallel accounts emphasize this as core to Jesus' ethical revolution. Ancient Greek sources used the term anatomically for the jaw or cheek, and striking the cheek appears in contexts of contempt and insult across ancient Near Eastern literature.
