salpizō -- to sound a trumpet, to blow a blast; apocalyptic, liturgical, and figurative trumpet-blowing
The verb salpizō ('sound a trumpet') denotes the act of blowing a trumpet or horn. Its New Testament usage is dominated by Revelation's seven angels, each of whom 'sounds' a trumpet to inaugurate successive judgments upon the earth (Rev 8:6-13; 9:1, 13; 10:7; 11:15). Paul uses the verb eschatologically for the last trumpet that signals the resurrection: 'the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable' (1 Cor 15:52). Jesus employs it with biting irony in the Sermon on the Mount, warning hypocrites not to 'sound a trumpet before you' when giving to the needy (Matt 6:2). Whether apocalyptic, eschatological, or satirical, the underlying action is the same. Spanish tocar la trompeta, French sonner de la trompette, and German posaunen converge on a single sense.

Senses
1. sound a trumpet, blow To blow or sound a trumpet, covering apocalyptic judgment blasts (Rev 8:7-13; 9:1; 11:15), the eschatological last trumpet (1 Cor 15:52), and Jesus' figurative use for ostentatious charity (Matt 6:2). Spanish tocar-trompeta, French sonner-de-la-trompette, and German posaunen treat all occurrences as one undivided action. 12×
