πρωϊνός G4407
of the morning, belonging to or associated with early dawn
An adjective modifying nouns related to morning. Both NT uses are in Revelation's closing chapters, both referring to Christ. In 2:28, Jesus promises to give the overcomers the morning star. In 22:16, he identifies himself as the bright morning star. The image draws on Numbers 24:17 and ancient associations of the morning star (Venus) with kingship and new beginnings—Christ is the herald of eternal day.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The glosses ('morning,' 'de la mañana,' 'morgen-') adjectivally describe the star. Revelation 2:28 and 22:16 both use the phrase 'morning star' as a title or gift associated with Christ. The image is messianic—the star that rises to announce the end of night and the beginning of God's new creation. Jesus is both the giver of this hope and the embodiment of it. 2×
