N-GFS  |  2× in 1 sense
early morning, the time at daybreak or dawn
A noun denoting the early morning hours. In Matthew 27:1, the chief priests and elders take counsel against Jesus at early morning to put him to death—the first light after the nighttime trial. In John 21:4, Jesus stands on the shore at early morning as the disciples return from a fruitless night of fishing. Both passages set significant events at daybreak: one marks the culmination of Jesus' Passion, the other a resurrection appearance.

Senses
1. sense 1 The glosses ('morning,' 'mañana,' 'matin,' 'früh morgens') uniformly point to the early hours. Matthew 27:1 places the Sanhedrin's formal death sentence at dawn, while John 21:4 sets the lakeshore encounter with the risen Jesus at daybreak. The time marker adds poignancy—new light dawns as Jesus faces crucifixion, and resurrection morning literally breaks as he appears to his disciples.
