V-PIA-3P  |  20× in 3 senses
To go before or lead the way; also to bring someone forward, or to precede in time.
Proago combines pro ('before') with ago ('lead'), yielding a verb that moves in front -- spatially, causally, or temporally. Its most vivid NT use is the star that 'went before' the Magi (Matt 2:9) and Jesus going ahead of his disciples into Galilee (Matt 26:32; Mark 14:28). In Acts it takes a transitive turn: guards bring Peter forward, a jailer leads Paul out (Acts 12:6; 16:30). The Pastoral Epistles extend the image to time, speaking of prophecies that 'preceded' about Timothy (1 Tim 1:18) and a former commandment set aside (Heb 7:18).

Senses
1. go before, lead the way To go ahead spatially, leading the way or walking in front of others. The star over Bethlehem proegein the Magi (Matt 2:9); crowds go before Jesus into Jerusalem (Matt 21:9); Jesus promises to proago his disciples into Galilee after the resurrection (Matt 26:32). Spanish 'ir delante' and German 'vorangehen' both capture the forward-motion image. This is the most frequent sense, appearing thirteen times. 13×

2. bring forward, lead out To bring someone forward or lead them out, acting transitively upon a person. In Acts 12:6, Herod is about to 'bring forth' Peter; in Acts 16:30 the jailer 'leads out' Paul and Silas. Spanish shifts from 'ir delante' to 'sacar' (to take out), revealing the transitive force. Acts 25:26 uses it for presenting a prisoner before an assembly. Four occurrences carry this causative nuance.

3. precede temporally To precede in time or logical order, referring to something prior. First Timothy 1:18 recalls prophecies that 'went before' concerning Timothy, and Hebrews 7:18 speaks of a preceding commandment being set aside. Spanish 'precedente' and English 'preceding' both mark the temporal shift. This sense appears three times, always in epistolary argument about what came first.
