Pentecost; the fiftieth day after Passover, the Feast of Weeks, celebrating firstfruits and the giving of the Spirit
Named for the 'fiftieth' day after Passover, Pentecost was the Jewish Feast of Weeks celebrating the grain harvest. The Day of Pentecost became forever significant when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the assembled disciples (Acts 2:1). Paul hurries to reach Jerusalem by Pentecost (Acts 20:16) and plans to stay in Ephesus until Pentecost because a door for ministry has opened (1 Cor 16:8). What was an agricultural festival in the Old Covenant became the birthday of the church, the harvest of the Spirit's first fruits.
