Parachrema means 'on the spot, immediately, at that very moment,' composed of para ('at, beside') and chrema ('thing, matter'). Its 18 New Testament occurrences are concentrated overwhelmingly in Luke-Acts, where it becomes Luke's preferred term for the instantaneous effect of divine power. When Zechariah is struck mute, it happens parachrema (Luke 1:64 — and his speech returns parachrema). When Jesus rebukes the fever in Simon's mother-in-law, she rises parachrema (Luke 4:39). The paralytic takes up his bed parachrema (Luke 5:25). The bent woman straightens parachrema (Luke 13:13). The blind man near Jericho receives sight parachrema (Luke 18:43). In Acts, the same word punctuates miraculous judgments: Ananias falls dead parachrema (Acts 5:10), Elymas is struck blind parachrema (Acts 13:11), and the jailer's chains fall off parachrema (Acts 16:26, 33). Matthew uses it twice for the cursed fig tree that withers parachrema (Matt 21:19-20). The adverb communicates that God's word accomplishes its purpose without delay. Spanish 'al instante,' French 'aussitot/a l'instant,' and German 'sogleich' capture this immediacy.
