οὐρά G3769
Tail; the tail of a creature, used in Revelation of scorpion-like and serpentine tails wielding destructive power.
A feminine noun meaning tail, used exclusively in Revelation to describe the terrifying appendages of apocalyptic creatures. The locusts of the fifth trumpet have tails like scorpions with stingers that torment for five months (Rev 9:10). The cavalry horses of the sixth trumpet have tails like serpents, with heads that inflict harm (Rev 9:19). The great red dragon's tail sweeps a third of the stars from heaven (Rev 12:4). The Spanish 'cola,' French 'queues,' and German 'Schwänze' all denote animal tails straightforwardly, but in Revelation the word is loaded with symbolic menace.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Tail — the rear appendage of a creature, used in the NT exclusively in Revelation's apocalyptic visions as instruments of destruction and power. In Rev 9:10 the demonic locusts have scorpion-like tails with stingers that torment humanity. Rev 9:19 describes war-horses whose serpentine tails have heads that deal harm. Most dramatically, Rev 12:4 depicts the dragon's tail sweeping a third of heaven's stars to earth — an image of cosmic devastation. The classical Greek military sense of οὐρά as 'rearguard' may linger in the background, but in the NT the word functions entirely within the symbolic bestiary of Revelation. The Spanish 'cola' and French 'queues' translate the literal sense directly. 5×
