In Acts 27:11, the Roman centurion Julius heeds the advice of the ship's captain (ναύκληρος) and pilot rather than Paul's warning not to sail. The term originally denoted a shipowner who also captained his own merchant vessel, though later it could refer to any master mariner. Classical sources distinguish the ναύκληρος from the helmsman (κυβερνήτης) who handled steering, and from the merchant (ἔμπορος) who owned cargo. Luke's narrative shows the centurion deferring to professional maritime judgment—a reasonable decision that nevertheless leads the ship into the storm Paul had predicted.
