μον-όφθαλμος G3442
Adj-AMS  |  2× in 1 sense
one-eyed, having lost or lacking one eye
The physical condition of having only one functioning eye. Jesus uses this vivid term in His hyperbolic teaching about radical discipleship: better to enter life one-eyed than to be thrown into hell with both eyes intact (Matthew 18:9, Mark 9:47). The stark physicality of the word underscores the severity of Jesus' point—no earthly faculty, however valuable, is worth preserving if it causes you to stumble spiritually.

Senses
1. sense 1 Having one eye, whether by birth defect or injury. The classical distinction between 'one who has one eye like the Cyclops' versus 'one who has lost an eye' collapses in Jesus' hyperbolic discourse—the point is radical amputation of whatever causes sin. Spanish 'tuerto' (one-eyed), French 'borgne,' and German 'einaeugig' all capture the literal sense of monocular vision, reinforcing Jesus' shocking imagery about the cost of discipleship.
