μείγνυμι G3396
To mix or mingle one substance with another; to blend liquids or materials together.
A basic verb of physical mixing or blending, used in the New Testament for combining substances together. Its appearances are vivid and memorable: wine mixed with gall offered to Jesus on the cross (Matt 27:34), Pilate mingling the blood of Galilean worshippers with their sacrifices (Luke 13:1), fire mixed with blood raining from the sky (Rev 8:7), and a sea of glass mixed with fire before God's throne (Rev 15:2). The translations consistently reflect physical blending -- Spanish 'mezclar,' French 'mêler,' German 'mischen' -- all cognates of the same basic concept of combining disparate elements into one.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To mix, mingle, or blend one substance with another, whether liquids, solids, or symbolic elements. The cross-linguistic consistency is striking: Spanish 'mezclar,' French 'mêler,' and German 'mischen' all denote physical blending. In Matthew 27:34 wine is mixed with gall as a bitter draught for Jesus. Luke 13:1 uses it figuratively and grimly of Pilate mixing Galilean blood with their sacrifices. In Revelation 8:7 fire is mixed with blood in apocalyptic judgment, and in 15:2 a glassy sea is mixed with fire in a vision of heavenly splendor. 4×
