V-AIA-3S  |  2× in 1 sense
to deport, exile, or cause to migrate; to remove people from their homeland to another location
To deport, relocate, or cause to emigrate—forcibly moving people from their homeland. Stephen's speech uses it twice: God removed Israel's idolaters beyond Babylon (Acts 7:43), and Abraham migrated after his father's death (7:4, though some manuscripts use a different verb). Classical Greek used it for leading settlers to a new home or emigrating. The passive often means being exiled or deported. Later it could be used intransitively for voluntary emigration, but the biblical sense emphasizes God's action as judge and guide.

Senses
1. sense 1 Acts 7:43 quotes Amos about deportation as judgment—God will exile idolaters. Acts 7:4 describes Abraham's migration (though textual variants exist), possibly emphasizing divine direction. Classical usage covered both voluntary emigration and forced relocation. The verb captures the exile's trauma—being uprooted from ancestral land. Spanish trasladar and French déporter preserve the relocation sense, though German simply transliterates the Greek in one instance.
