V-AMA-2P  |  4× in 1 sense
To make a disciple, train as a follower; to be discipled or instructed in the ways of the kingdom.
Matheteuo means to make someone a disciple -- to bring them into a relationship of learning and following. Built from mathetes (disciple/learner), this verb carries the full weight of the Great Commission: 'Go and make disciples of all nations' (Matt 28:19). It appears in both active and passive senses: Joseph of Arimathea 'had been discipled' to Jesus (Matt 27:57), a scribe trained for the kingdom draws from treasures old and new (Matt 13:52), and Paul and Barnabas 'made many disciples' in Derbe (Acts 14:21). The verb implies not just initial conversion but ongoing formation.

Senses
1. sense 1 To make someone a disciple or to undergo discipleship training. The Great Commission (Matt 28:19) uses the imperative 'make disciples of all nations,' establishing this as the church's central mission verb. Matt 27:57 describes Joseph of Arimathea as 'having been discipled' to Jesus (passive), while Matt 13:52 pictures a scribe 'discipled for the kingdom.' In Acts 14:21 Paul and Barnabas disciple many in Derbe. Spanish 'hacer discípulos' and French 'devenir disciple' together capture both the active and passive dimensions of the word.
